Why

There’s an age in every child’s life when it seems the only word they know is “Why?”.

There’s an age in every child’s life when it seems the only word they know is “Why?”.

What started off as a simple explanation becomes a multi-layered, fact-finding inquisition at the parents expense. Oftentimes, it’s not until the third or fourth question do we realize that the child is truly taking advantage of the situation.

What started off as a simple explanation becomes a multi-layered, fact-finding inquisition at the parents expense. Oftentimes, it’s not until the third or fourth question do we realize that the child is truly taking advantage of the situation.

We too as adults like to ask why. Mostly when a crisis hits and we can’t understand. We look up at the Daddy-in-the-sky tugging on his white robes and incessantly ask “ Why?”. We are confounded at times by situations beyond our human understanding. Entrapped by time, we are lost in a field of possible outcomes and unknown variables. Our response, though simple is always profound in the depth of its...“lostness”.

The asking of why is an ingrained aspect of the human condition, going back millennia. Probably of all the authors in the Bible, David expressed this aspect of our experience the best. This theme threads a wide area of the Psalms we know he wrote. It also shows how open God is to us pouring out our hearts. Is this possibly why the Psalms is the longest book in the Bible?

A broken and contrite heart is the sacrifice He desires. No “highfalutin” prayers are necessary, or drawn out spiritual justifications of disconnected points. God just wants to hear from you. The genuine you, the authentic you. Yes, He may know our thoughts but He wants us to speak from the depths of our hearts. And even if why is the only word that escapes our lips...He would have known exactly what we mean.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. - Psalm 43:5
