Taxi Chapter Six verse Fear

I was upset, livid. I could not believe what I just saw happen before my eyes.

I was upset, livid. I could not believe what I just saw happen before my eyes.

I sat there at the traffic light at the entrance to my workplace at the time (Northern Caribbean University), I saw my light turn to green, I almost drove off but took a breath. ZOOM!

I sat there at the traffic light at the entrance to my workplace at the time (Northern Caribbean University), I saw my light turn to green, I almost drove off but took a breath. ZOOM!

Through his red went a taxi in front of me. I decided to go after him. Why? I have no idea, but I did. Maybe its because a dear cousin of mine lost her husband to a red light runner years ago. It still pains me whenever I remember it. But one thing is for certain. Fury and fate would not have it that day. And so I gave chase. He shortly thereafter turned into the same side street I was planning to take. I went up beside him, blew my horn with immediate urgency and he stopped. I slowly lowered the passenger window close to him and asked him the question that was by this time burning a hole in my frontal lobe. “Why you broke the light?”. I asked calmly but with firm authority. With the utmost respect he managed to stammer out his explanation. “Sir, Me come through pon di yellow (lie) an’ I was coming in too fast an’ couldn’ stop Sir”. I put up my window and drove off. I was a bit surprised by the response but then it made sense. Only after realising he thought I was a police officer. My shaven head and tinted tested glasses apparently helped to throw him off. Fear gripped his every word for absolutely no reason.

How many times the enemy of souls causes us to fear things that have absolutely no power over us. There are times when our natural response to fear can help to save our lives. Whether we choose fight or flight our human instincts can come in very handy in our defence. Other times our fear of failure, defeat, loneliness or shame and so many other things can cause us to make horrible decisions. King Saul murdered an entire town of his own people as he feared the spreading popularity of the “terrorist” David. Out of fear of not reproducing, Sarah had Abraham have a child with her servant Hagar. Out of fear of the losing his crown to a baby, Herod wiped out an entire generation of baby boys.

The Bible is littered with examples of how fear hijacks the mind and subverts the will. We are to be wise when approached by this bully of an emotion. It multiplies perceptions that do not exist and casts doubt on even the very existence of God. No wonder “fear not” or “do not be afraid” is used to such incredible effect in the Bible. The power of the mind is limited or multiplied by that which it believes to be possible. Fear is an unwelcome irritant that paralyzes our faith. The only way we can move beyond this situation is to abide daily in Him, through prayer and the Word. What are you afraid of facing today? Speak truth to “power”! God has utterly defeated, that which you fear. The children of the Most, High are to walk in dominion over this land! Today and every day!

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
