By the time he got there, the flooding had killed at least 40 people.

Dressed in white, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chief minister of central Madhya Pradesh state had arrived to inspect the devastation caused by the waters.

There was one problem though. There were images captured of him being carried across ankle deep water by an entourage of police officers. The explanation was he could possibly slip and fall and there may have been snakes or scorpions in the water that could bite him. The social media outrage was immediate and unforgiving. One party leader claimed, “When people are dying from flooding, Chouhan was concerned about his shoes,”. Some time during the same day the same chief minister Shivraj in addressing the people stated, “the government is with you at the time of difficulties”. How could they believe him if he was not willing to experience some discomfort during his visit?

It is incredible to know that the Divine Entity we know as Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, became fully human in his mission to give us access to eternal life once more. We know so much of his sacrifice from the Bible but for many He is still just a teacher from a by-gone era. God remains distant and abstract as we who claim to carry Him in our hearts, at times, distance ourselves from those who need Him most. We fail to connect, initiate or engage as we seek to float on “christian privilege”. I too am guilty of this. What is true though is, as we make our selves vulnerable in our quest to serve others in His name, we are slowly but surely drawn closer to Him. Let us make an effort to shed pride, power and privilege as we seek to love the unlovable no matter who they are or where they happen to be. Even if, in deep murky waters. Could you? Will you?

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. - Matthew 25:40
