Life is like…

Forrest Gump, is by far one of the most interesting  and thought provoking films I have ever seen.

It is quite likely the quintessential underdog story.  Without giving anything away, there is an unforgettable part of the movie, where as Gump relives the scenes of his life he shares one of the central themes of the film. “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”.

Humans have an intense love-hate relationship with the unpredictability that life drops on our lap. A child suddenly falling sick, a gift basket out of nowhere, a car accident, a surprise visit from an unsuspecting person. Life has sweet, bitter and even burn-your-mouth hot chocolates. You really never know which one will be placed squarely in front of you. Nine times out of ten we have no choice…but to eat it.

It takes an incredible amount of strength to accept the good, the bad and the occasionally ugly that comes our way on a daily basis. The sheer unpredictability of it all can be suffocating but also inspiring at the same time. While both negative and positive situations can be a massive shock to the system we serve a God that provides a powerful way to absorb these sudden and at times life-threatening storms.

Prayer.

I see Jesus sitting in the Garden of Gethsemane at His absolutely weakest moment, totally surprised by the emotions flooding His system. Having the divine strands of DNA being strangled by the human ones as fear gripped His mind. I can see Him praying with eyes wide open questioning His Father as He looked up beyond the stars, Do I, really, have to, do this, Abba? His intense praying ripped a chasm into the darkness that surrounded Him that night. Ministering angels then came and helped Him to be at peace.

My friends, the heart that is most fluent in the language of prayer will be closest to the Arm of protection in the time of deepest need. Speak to Him constantly. Thank God when the good happens, in the moment it happens. Express your feelings of fear as you look death and destruction in the face. Share the good, the bad, the ugly. Make it personal. You see, while God can see a thought in our minds, only we can express it with our unique voice. This is how He gets to truly know us. Be fluent in the language of prayer. It will make eating the unpredictable bits of chocolate a whole lot easier especially if they are incredibly bitter.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6-7
