Emergency Protocol

It happens at the start of every flight, unless perhaps you have your own private jet.

The flight attendant comes out and goes over the emergency protocol in case of an emergency landing. On every public flight, by law, this procedure must take place. Some people watch, others don’t. Some could literally care less.

Reminds you of anything? Yes…the gospel. Some people will pay attention, others will not, and quite a few could care less. I can imagine some pastors and preachers, looking down on the congregation, studying the faces of those looking back and seeing these three categories staring back at them. If I am to tell the truth, I think I have cycled through all three myself. And sometimes I feel that way with my spiritual walk in general, not just during a sermon. Do you?

Since of late, I have purposed to stop whatever I’m doing when the flight attendant starts the routine and focus. Because of course repetition deepens impression. And no one ever knows what can happen at 20,000 feet above ground. There is protocol that we have access to for an even greater situations than an air traffic emergency?  The Divine Protocol is called the Bible. The enemy does all he can to bedevil and distract us from reading it, absorbing it, focusing on it. Because we think today will be like yesterday. There won’t be an emergency in our lives. We think it will be smooth sailing.

But we shouldn’t be digesting the Bible just because we want to be most efficient adjusting our sails in a storm or to brace properly for an emergency landing. The Bible isn’t an emergency manual. His Word is a living breathing entity that speaks to us from His heart whenever we take the time to read it, absorb it, focus on it.  Nothing should ever take the place of the Divine Protocol designed to help us through our day, through our week, through our lives. Take the time, eternity will be forever worth it.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
