For anyone that’s ever watched a NBA basketball game on television, or in person in an arena, you more than likely would have heard the chant…

”D-FENCE!!!, D-FENCE!!!, D-FENCE!!!”.  When you hear almost 8 to 10,000 voices shouting that chant, it takes a very focused mind to block out the distraction of so many rabid fans. Interestingly enough, I’ve always found it amazing how quickly the chants disappear the moment the ball swishes through the net.

Unfortunately, though, some of us are living our Christian lives always in defence. Consider the disciples before Jesus was crucified. Their internal squabbles, petty politics and personal insecurities distracted the power of what Jesus wanted to be a more powerful ministry. In one case, one man killed himself. That inward-focused, navel gazing brand of Christianity was not helping. It shifted the center-of-gravity from being Jesus-centric to self-centric. The “fishers of men” concept became lost at “see-me-first”. This tends to happen when we spend more time and energy dealing with our spiritual internal issues and not enough time on fighting to save other souls that have no idea how to save themselves. Bottom-line. Too many of us, spend our salvation on ourselves.

What we need to realise is that, when our thoughts and actions are focused on Him and his mission, the mission changes us. While we are out there winning for Him, He is working on the inside bringing us closer TO Him. It happens in an almost imperceivable way. Our dependence, intimacy and overall connection bind us ever so much closer to God. He becomes our D-FENCE, freeing our minds up to focus on OFFENSE against the enemy. Try it. Yes, it will take an extra measure of faith, to get off D-FENCE,  but that is how the spiritual war is won.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
