Capital quest

Alex was not your typical 29 year old.

Alex was not your typical 29 year old.

But in some ways, he actually was. A fearless drive to be the master of his domain. A distinct despise of being fenced into other people’s limited thinking whether they are older or more powerful than he was. He pushed the limits of his world.

But in some ways, he actually was. A fearless drive to be the master of his domain. A distinct despise of being fenced into other people’s limited thinking whether they are older or more powerful than he was. He pushed the limits of his world.

Challenges great or small meant nothing to him. He had the kind of appetite for risk and danger that made him ridiculously popular and incredibly wealthy. But things were about to change.

Radically.

Alexander the Great at 29, had come to the edge of his empire when he conquered India. The Greeks believed India was the edge of the known world, so this final conquest was his most significant. Interestingly enough, 3 years later at the ripe old age of 32, he died. While in India though, Alexander crossed paths with quite a few interesting gurus and sages. Philosophical minds that challenged the knowledge he gained at the feet of Aristotle.

On one particular occurrence, the emperor’s procession was entering a village and was trying to make it’s way through the crowded streets. One of the paiges from his entourage came across a group of sages that decided they were not leaving and would occupy the road. A general approached them who in earnest tried as well to have them “tek weh dem self”. He engaged one of the more senior of these men in a spirited verbal exchange. At it’s peak, he asked the guru: “Alexander has conquered the world, what have you done?” Without a moment’s hesitation, the sage quietly shot back: “I have conquered the need to conquer the world”.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with success and conquering our fears to overcome our challenges, but conquest without contentment is ultimately corrosive. It depletes our spirit, robs us of peace and is the cancerous tumor that suffocates our joy. While on the quest of world domination or just simply financial independence may we find contentment in knowing Jesus AND being KNOWN by Him. Simply...to: Seek . Him . First. May our planetary passions be tempered by limitless eternity. All of us like Alexander the Great will one day learn, we may conquer but never truly control. We think we own but all we have done is disturb the surface the earth.

Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
